Not-doing

[One who] is going to desire to take the empire and to make it.
I see him not obtain it;
that is all.
The empire [is] a divine vessel.
Not can it be made, indeed.
[Who] makes it, the one, mars it.

[Who] takes hold of it, the one loses it.
Therefore of beings some go on, others follow,
some breathe warmly, others breathe coldly,
some [are] strong, others [are] weak,
some succeed [are filled with a cargo] others succumb [come out vanquished].

Therefore the holy man abandons pleasures abandons extravagance, abandons indulgence.

Know not how to sing

Know not how to sing
Know not how to cry
Learning to learn
new tunes and notes
in time after.

"One by one the sands are flowing ...."

One by one the sands are flowing,

Hours are golden links, God's token
Reaching heaven; but one by one
Take them, lest the chain be broken
Ere the pilgrimage be done.

"Love brings ecstasy ...."

-->
... I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy - ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness - that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined....
