Gray Heron

Pelecaniformes - Ardeidae - Ardea cinerea

Generally quite common and conspicuous in wetland habitats from marshes and tidal flats to small ponds, ditches, and wet fields; nests colonially in tall trees. Mainly seen as singles or in small groups, standing quietly in or at the edge of water, less often hunting in fields. Plumage mostly gray overall, with paler neck; adult has white crown, black eyebrows, and black shoulder patch. Like other herons and egrets, flies with neck pulled in to form a bulge.

Pond-Heron

Pelecaniiformes - Ardeidae - Ardeola sp

Chinese Pond-Heron - Ardeola bacchus
Often mistaken for an egret in flight due to its all-white wings, but the dark head separates it from any egret. This medium-sized heron is found across many different marshy habitats. Breeding adults have a chestnut head, neck, and breast, and a veil of bluish-black plumes over the white wings. Nonbreeding adults and juveniles are brown all over save for the white wings. In areas where the ranges of multiple pond-heron species overlap, nonbreeders and juveniles are best left unidentified.

Indian Pond-Heron - Ardeola grayii
A small heron that is common in most aquatic habitats across the Indian subcontinent. Adults in breeding plumage have a dark reddish brown back that contrasts with a yellowish head, neck, and breast. In nonbreeding plumage they are virtually indistinguishable from nonbreeding Chinese Pond-Heron. In flight, adults appear surprisingly white due to their strikingly white wings, underparts, and tail. Although typically solitary, large numbers often gather where food is plentiful. Prone to seasonally local movements and vagrancy.

Javan Pond-Heron - Ardeola speciosa
Stout heron with flashing white wings; can be mistaken for a egret in flight, but note darker head in all plumages. Handsome in breeding plumage, with creamy head, dark red breast, and lacy black plumes on the back. Streaky brown nonbreeding plumage is nearly indistinguishable from other pond-herons. Forages in rice paddies, pond and lake edges, and mangroves.

Non-breeding plumage - purpose of change and transformation.

Not counting

In sameness

Always so many, so much, the endless stream does not make for more but for less.

Beware of strength

Man is his life,
is indeed tender weak.
He dies, he is indeed hard stiff.
The ten thousand things,
the grass, trees in their life are indeed tender delicate.
They die, they are indeed rigid dry.

Therefore the hard stiff ones
death's companions
The tender weak ones
life's companions.

Therefore arms are strong,
then they will not conquer.
Trees strong,
then they will be doomed.
The strong great stay below.
The tender, the weak stay above.

Adaptation to change

One's administration is unostentatious, unostentatious
one's people are simple, simple.
One's administration is prying, prying
one's people are needy, needy.
Misery alas! happiness's place it supports.
Happiness alas! misery's place it conceals.
Who knows its limits?
It not ceases.

The normal in turn becomes abnormal.
The good in turn becomes unlucky.
The people's confusion!
It daily assuredly since long.

Therefore the holy man is square yet not he injures
angular yet not he hurts
upright yet not strict
bright yet not shining.

The profound virtue

Knows, the one not speaks.
Speaks the one not knows.
He shuts his mouth, closes his gates.

He blunts his sharpness.
He unravels his tangles.
He dims his brilliancy.
He identifies himself with the dust.
This is called profound identification.

Therefore not he can be obtained and be loved
and not can he be obtained and be discarded.
Not can he be obtained and interested in profit
and not can he be obtained and be injured.
Not can he be obtained and be honored,
and not can he be obtained and be humiliated.
Therefore it becomes the world's honor.

Of the Mysterious the seal

Embodies virtue its fulness is comparable to an infant child.
Poisonous insects not sting.
Wild beasts not seize.
Carnivorous birds not strike.
The bones are weak, the muscles are tender yet the grasp is firm.
He does not yet know the female the male their relation
yet the child's virility is erect.
His spirit its perfection, indeed.
All the day he cries and sobs not becomes hoarse.
His harmony its perfection, indeed.

To know the harmonious is called eternal.
To know the eternal is called enlightened.
To increase life is called a blessing
The heart directing spirit is called strength.
Things fully grown are about to decay.
We call it uncreason.
Unreason soon ceases.

To cultivate intuition

Well planted the thing not is uprooted.
Well is preserved the thing not is taken away.

Sons', grandsons' offerings and ancestor worship not will cease.
Who practises it in person his virtue then is real
practises it in his family, his virtue is overflowing
practises it in his township, his virtue then is lasting
practises it in his country, his virtue the is abundant
practises this in the world. his virtue then is universal.

Therefore by one's person one tests persons.
By one's family one tests families.
By one's township one tests townships.
By one's country one tests countries.
By one's world one tests worlds
I what-by know the world's being such?
By this.

Identity and non-identity

A superior scholar listening to reason,
he is strenuous and practises it.
An average scholar listening to reason,
sometimes keeps, sometimes loses.
An inferior scholar listening to reason
greatly ridicules it.
not he ridiculed,
not could thus to be regarded as reason.

Therefore who builds words the one says that:
Those enlightened by reason resemble the dark.
Those advanced in reason resemble the retreating.
The straight in reason resemble the rugged.
The high in virtue resemble a valley.
The perfect is whiteness are likely to be put to shame.
The broadest in virtue resemble the not-sufficient.
Firmly established virtue resembles the remiss.
Simple chastity resembles the changing.
The greatest square has no corner.
The greatest vessel not yet is completed.
The greatest sound is void of speech.
The greatest form has no shape.

Reason when hidden,
not having name.
However it is exactly reason can give and complete.
